Iran pulse market has been attractive to both regional and foreign Producers and traders are doing their best to have a bigger share in the competitive pulse market of Iran. Even though Iran produces a fine amount of various pulses. There is so much Pulses imported from other countries.
Higher Demand of Pulses in Iran, Different harvest season in other countries, quality, etc. are main reasons of importing pulses in Iran.
Chickpeas, Lentil and split lentils are the most common used pulses in Iran.
Chickpeas
The statistics from Iran Customs Office show that 20thousand Tonnes of Chickpeas was imported in the Iranian year 1393 (2014-2015 Gregorian Calendar). This amount in year 1394(2015-2016) had risen to to 23 thousand tonnes. The statistics indicate also that amount of imported Chickpeas to Iran, From April to June 2016 was more than 4700 tonnes.
A main reason to less import of chickpeas than other pulses like lentils is that consumption of Chickpeas per capita amongst Iranians is under the international average.

Lentils
Statistics from the same source indicate that in year 1393, around 63 thousand tonnes of Lentil was imported to Iran and this number had risen by 30% for year 1394 and reached to 91 thousand tonnes. The amount of lentil importation on the first month of 1396 (April-may 2017) was 5 thousand tonnes.
United Arab emirates, Pakistan, Turkey, China and Canada were the exporters of lentil in year 1393. Afghanistan, Oman, Russia, Kazakhstan and India have been added to the list of countries that IRan imports lentil from.
Iran also produces Lentils. The province of East-Azerbaijan is the main producer of lentils in Iran. that produced around 90 thousand tonnes in year 1394 and is predicted to harvest around 99 thousand tonnes in the current year. Yet, the national production is not enough and it is the main reason of Lentil that are imported in pulses market of Iran.
